If you didn’t think that phone solicitors could get anymore absurd, the Escanaba Department of Public Safety is issuing a warning to citizens of the community about a new phone scam currently circulating around town.
One sick scammer is using a computer generated voice and some tech skills to call people spoofing (faking) recognizable or local numbers with an automated prompt about lowering credit card interest rates with different options available once you click a designated button. Once you proceed to connect to a “live person,” someone will come on the line and offer a series of sexually obscene questions and comments. Any attempts to call back the number result in connection to the actual owner of the number who is unaware of the situation. Though the caller does not ask for any personably identifiable information (PII) or attempt to swindle money or anything else from his victims, officials suggest that those who are not expecting any calls about ways to lower your credit card interest rates should end the call promptly without following the provided instructions. If you are one of the unlucky few who have already fallen victim to this atrocious act, you should contact your local authorities to report this crime, only then can they can find and stop this person from ever doing this to anyone else again.
In most cases if you receive an enthusiastic automated call about a miraculous service offering a way out of debt, they should not be taken seriously. If you have real questions about potentially lowering the interest rates of your credit cards, your best option is to contact a financial counselor or a reputable banking institution for information about ways to improve your credit and reduce your debt.
